About the Machon
An independent scholarly research institute dedicated to manuscript-based Torah scholarship
Our Mission
Machon Rabbi Chaim Vital is dedicated to the preservation, critical study, and responsible publication of the authentic writings and teachings of Rabbi Chaim Vital (ז״ל), whose works constitute the primary documentary foundation of Lurianic Kabbalah. The institute’s work is grounded in direct engagement with primary manuscript sources and governed by rigorous scholarly standards.
The Machon addresses longstanding challenges in the textual transmission of Vital’s writings—including manuscript dispersion, editorial alteration, and later accretions—by returning to early, authoritative manuscript witnesses (כתבי־יד) and producing historically responsible critical editions with transparent editorial documentation.
Scholarly Methodology
Our approach to textual scholarship follows established academic standards in manuscript studies and textual criticism while maintaining deep reverence for the sacred nature of these teachings. Our work includes:
- Manuscript collation — Systematic comparison of multiple manuscript witnesses to establish the most authentic text
- Paleographic analysis — Examination of handwriting styles and scribal practices to date and authenticate manuscripts
- Textual criticism — Careful evaluation of variants to identify later additions, scribal errors, and editorial changes
- Historical contextualization — Situating texts within their proper historical and intellectual context
Guiding Principles
Manuscript Fidelity
נאמנות לכתבי-יד
We prioritize early, reliable handwritten sources over printed editions, which often contain centuries of editorial changes and accretions.
Historical Responsibility
אחריות היסטורית
We present texts in their original context without retrojecting later customs, interpretations, or practices.
Editorial Restraint
ריסון עריכתי
We avoid conjecture, harmonization, embellishment, or undocumented changes to source material.
Institutional Independence
עצמאות מוסדית
We maintain no affiliations with publishers, institutions, or organizations that could compromise scholarly integrity.
Leadership
Director (Rosh HaMachon)
Machon Rabbi Chaim Vital was founded and is directed by Rabbi Aharon Samekhov, who serves as Rosh HaMachon (Head of the Institute). He sets the Machon’s scholarly direction and research agenda, oversees manuscript-based investigation, establishes editorial standards, and leads the publication program from source analysis through final critical edition. In this capacity, he ensures fidelity to early manuscript witnesses, adherence to conservative and transparent methodology, and responsible stewardship of Jewish intellectual heritage.
