Machon Rabbi Chaim Vital is an independent scholarly institute founded and directed by Rabbi Aharon Samekhov, dedicated to the preservation, critical study, and responsible publication of the writings and teachings of Rabbi Chaim Vital ז״ל, the principal historical transmitter of the teachings of Rabbi Isaac Luria (the Arizal).
For centuries, the writings of Rabbi Chaim Vital have served as the primary documentary basis for what later came to be known as Lurianic Kabbalah and have exerted lasting influence on Jewish intellectual, devotional, and ritual traditions. At the same time, the textual transmission of these works has been shaped by manuscript dispersion, editorial intervention, and later accretions.
The Machon was established to address these challenges through rigorous manuscript research and restrained, transparent scholarship.
Mission
The mission of Machon Rabbi Chaim Vital is to safeguard the textual integrity of Rabbi Chaim Vital’s writings by returning to the earliest and most authoritative manuscript sources and presenting them faithfully, without conjecture, embellishment, or retrospective reinterpretation.
The Machon’s aim is preservation rather than innovation, clarity rather than harmonization, and fidelity to the historical record as reflected in the surviving manuscript tradition.
Scholarly Methodology
The work of the Machon is governed by three foundational principles:
Manuscript Fidelity
Primary handwritten sources (כתבי־יד), drawn from public and private collections, are carefully examined, compared, and evaluated. Priority is given to early and authoritative manuscript witnesses, with attention to provenance, scribal practice, and textual variation.
Historical Responsibility
Texts are presented within their historical, halachic, and intellectual context. Later customs, interpretive frameworks, or doctrinal developments are not retrojected into earlier sources, and distinct historical layers are not conflated.
Editorial Restraint
Publications avoid conjectural reconstruction, harmonization, stylistic embellishment, or undocumented interpolation. Editorial intervention is limited to what is necessary for clarity and usability and is documented where applicable.
Institutional Independence
Machon Rabbi Chaim Vital operates as a fully independent scholarly initiative.
It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or subordinate to any publisher, academic institution, rabbinic authority, movement, or organization.
Its publications reflect independent scholarly judgment and do not claim institutional endorsement by any external body, past or present.
